About the Story

In the misty town of Shizumura, the bookshop named Leaves and Literature offers more than books and a warm cup of tea. For three generations, the shop has remained a steady heartbeat in an ever-changing world—a sanctuary where the scent of simmering leaves and the quiet of the shelves invite the town’s ancient roots to take hold and bring comfort to the weary.

Spanning Japan's Edo, Meiji, and post-Meiji eras, this series follows the shop’s evolution from the Tokaido road to a modernizing nation. It serves as a restorative bridge between the mundane and the spirit realm, featuring kami, yokai, and the magic of human connection.

The Three Characters and Timelines

• Yukimura Mariko (The Oldest Generation): The founding and building of the bookshop.
• Sugimori Yui (The Middle Generation): Navigating and maintaining the shop as Japan opens to foreign trade.
• Sugimori Kaiyou (The Youngest Generation): Reconnecting with the bookshop’s roots and its lingering spirits.

Besides the three main human characters, there are a handful of kami, yokai, and creatures you'll meet with every story. (In Japan, Kami are god-like beings and yokai are creatures known for being micheivous and can be good or bad by nature).

• Month 1 (December 2026): Your welcome box ships with your collector's binder, the premiere short story, and the first month's art print, letter, and discussion questions.

• Months 2–13: Each month, you will receive a new envelope containing that month's short story, illustration, letter, and discussion questions to add directly into your binder.
